The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has a populace of around 111,500 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was registered as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the citizens of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous presumed witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck several times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry went bust, though it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, mostly due to its nearness to London, and its excellent road and rail communications.
