River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately AD 60, and the town that grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industry went bust, but it still is a thriving and booming town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, and the first rate rail and road communications.
