The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of around 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of some 111,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many supposed witches.

Through the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, crafting such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its manufacturing plants went bust, in spite of this it continues to be a successful and booming town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to the capital, plus its superb road and rail communications.

Chelmsford is set close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
