A Saxon community followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

Chelmsford moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industry went bust, but it still is a thriving and booming town today, mostly due to the proximity to the capital, and the first rate rail and road communications.
