River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the village which grew up in the vicinity of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main culprits were consequently executed in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous assumed witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industrial facilities closed down, even so it still is a thriving and growing town today, for the most part due to the proximity to London, plus the terrific rail and road communications.
