An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading agitators were consequently put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into significant decline in the 1980's, because much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, mainly because of its proximity to London, and the first class road and rail communications.
