Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town has a population of approximately 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the community which expanded around the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Through the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it is still a flourishing and growing town today, largely due to the closeness to the city of london, and its quality road and rail communications.

The town can be found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 26 km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
