River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment which evolved surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many presumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town in the 19th century, producing goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its production facilities went bust, though it is still a thriving and developing town today, mostly because of its proximity to London, and the first class rail and road communications.
