Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fort in about the 1st century AD, and the commune which evolved surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading agitators were consequently put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless suspected witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit many times.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its industries ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, mostly due to the proximity to the city of london, plus the outstanding rail and road communications.
