The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of about 111,000 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the village which grew up round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the occupants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless alleged witches.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a significant industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered serious decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industry closed, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, largely due to its nearness to the city of london, and the good road and rail connections.

Chelmsford is set close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
