The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford has got a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the village which developed surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the inhabitants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless assumed witches.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years before (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its plants went bust, but it remains a thriving and blooming town today, predominantly because of its nearness to London, and its quality rail and road communications.

The town is located close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's roughly twenty six kilometers driving distance from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
