Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the encampment that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main culprits were consequently executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway line came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry closed down, even so it is still a flourishing and booming town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the city of london, and its first class rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is positioned near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen mls car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
