The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a driving distance of roughly 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of some 111,000 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the town that expanded in the vicinity of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading instigators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed many suspected witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry closed, though it is still a successful and booming town today, predominantly because of its proximity to London, and its excellent road and rail communications.

Chelmsford stands close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 26 kilometers car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
