Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of about 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the settlement which grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WWII, and it was hit a number of times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a successful and booming town today, primarily due to the proximity to London, plus the first class rail and road communications.

Chelmsford sits close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
