The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of some 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately the first century AD, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the occupants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous alleged witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a significant manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it still is a flourishing and developing town today, for the most part because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus its quality road and rail communications.
