River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the village which developed round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned into a considerable industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its industrial facilities went bust, even so it remains a successful and developing town today, mainly due to its proximity to the capital, and its excellent rail and road communications.

The town is situated beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some twenty six km from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
