An Anglo Saxon community followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its present identity of Chelmsford.

Its import in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was hit many times.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industries closed, though it remains a successful and booming town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to the capital, and its good rail and road links.
