The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of around thirty two miles from central London. The town boasts a population of about 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in about the first century AD, and the settlement that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main agitators were subsequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline in the 1980's, since a good deal of its industry closed, all the same it still is a thriving and developing town today, mostly because of its nearness to London, and its quality rail and road communications.
