Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, about 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in about the 1st century AD, and the settlement that grew up round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed in to a considerable manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, crafting such goods as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its factories shut down, even so it continues to be a successful and expanding town today, largely due to its nearness to the city of london, plus the first rate rail and road communications.

Chelmsford lies beside the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
