The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located on the rivers Chelmer and Can, approximately 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of some 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the main instigators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged many supposed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a vital manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.
