River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the village that grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the occupants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main culprits were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous supposed witches.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a serious manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting items such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industry shut down, although it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the capital, plus its first rate rail and road connections.

The town lies beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
