The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

Its significance in light industry led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the 1980's, as much of its industry went bust, though it is still a thriving and booming town today, principally due to the closeness to London, plus its superb rail and road links.
