Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main agitators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless suspected witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully hit a number of times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its manufacturing plants shut down, even so it continues to be a thriving and developing town today, principally because of its close proximity to London, and its terrific rail and road communications.

The town lies beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around 26 km from Colchester and about 51 kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
