Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th C, manufacturing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into considerable decline in the 1980's, simply because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a thriving and booming town today, primarily because of its closeness to the city of london, and its terrific rail and road connections.

The town lies close to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 26 km from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
