The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of around 32 miles from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

An Anglo Saxon camp came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main culprits were accordingly executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous suspected witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making such goods as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit a few times.
