The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the city of London. The town boasts a populace of approximately 111,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that developed around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were ultimately hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous assumed witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, producing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck many times.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a good deal of its industry shut down, though it still is a flourishing and booming town today, mostly due to its nearness to the city of london, and the first rate rail and road links.

The town is situated just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
