A Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, crafting such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and blooming town today, primarily due to its proximity to the capital, and the terrific rail and road communications.
