Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from central London. The town boasts a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the residents of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the instigators were subsequently hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a period of decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its manufacturing facilities shut down, though it still is a thriving and expanding town today, mainly due to its proximity to London, and its quality road and rail connections.
