A Saxon community followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town during the 19th C, making products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which allowed watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industries went bust, though it continues to be a successful and booming town today, for the most part due to its closeness to the capital, and the terrific rail and road communications.
