The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 111,000 people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the commune which grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement came after the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were accordingly hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck a number of times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the 1980's, simply because much of its industry went bust, though it is still a flourishing and blooming town today, mainly due to its proximity to the city of london, and its quality road and rail communications.

The town can be found just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 kilometers from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
