River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the encampment which expanded in the area of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were later put to death in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous suspected witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for watercraft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its manufacturing plants closed down, though it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the excellent rail and road communications.
