Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing in WWII, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through considerable decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, but it still is a successful and developing town today, largely due to its proximity to the capital, and the first class rail and road links.
