Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, around thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of around 111,500 residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

A Saxon encampment superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the main agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.
