Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,500 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main culprits were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous supposed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its factories shut down, though it still is a thriving and expanding town today, for the most part because of its close proximity to London, plus the quality road and rail communications.

Chelmsford sits beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some twenty six km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
