A Saxon settlement came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were later hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit many times.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the 1980's, mainly because much of its industry closed, though it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, primarily due to the closeness to London, plus the outstanding road and rail connections.
