River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the residents of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading instigators were later put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th C, making products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its factories closed down, even so it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, largely due to the closeness to the city of london, plus the good road and rail connections.

The town lies just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen miles from Colchester and about 32 miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
