River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD, and the encampment which expanded surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later being called by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were consequently put to death in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless alleged witches.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a serious manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit several times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, because much of its factories ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a successful and booming town today, primarily because of its close proximity to the capital, plus its excellent road and rail links.
