The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of around 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the encampment that expanded around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the citizens of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading agitators were subsequently put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous presumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, all the same it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to the closeness to London, and its first rate road and rail communications.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 51 kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
