Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Can and Chelmer, roughly 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the town that grew up round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community came after the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were thereafter executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, producing such products as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and growing town today, mostly due to the nearness to London, and the quality road and rail links.

The town is set close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about sixteen mls from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
