The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, around thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has a population of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in around AD 60, and the village that grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the locals of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading instigators were thereafter hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline in the 1980's, since much of its factories closed, even so it is still a thriving and developing town today, mostly due to the close proximity to London, and the quality road and rail communications.

The town sits beside the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 16 miles drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometres from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
