A Saxon camp followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a major manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industry closed down, although it is still a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to the closeness to the city of london, plus the first class rail and road communications.

The town is located just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 26 km from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
