Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from central London. The town has a populace of about 111,500 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the town that grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the ringleaders were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed into a vital manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was hit several times.

The train arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a time of decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its industry closed down, though it still is a thriving and expanding town today, predominantly because of its proximity to the capital, plus the terrific road and rail communications.

The town is positioned adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately twenty six kilometers from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
