The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of around 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a population of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortress in about the 1st century AD, and the settlement that expanded surrounding the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, however one hundred years later it had taken on its current name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the instigators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a significant manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, making products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck several times.

The railway arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its plants closed down, though it remains a successful and booming town today, principally due to its close proximity to the capital, and its good road and rail links.

The town stands just off the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
