The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, about 32 mls from the city of London. The town boasts a population of some 111,500 inhabitants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the commune which grew up round the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the ringleaders were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th century witnessed more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, crafting products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as much of its factories closed down, though it still is a flourishing and developing town today, primarily because of its closeness to the capital, and its exceptional road and rail communications.

The town can be found just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some 26 kilometres car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
