The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has got a population of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the settlement that grew up in the locality of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century a number of the locals of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were accordingly executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless supposed witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing in World War 2, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its industry went bust, even so it is still a successful and expanding town today, primarily due to the nearness to London, plus its first class road and rail links.

Chelmsford lies near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 26 km from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
