The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the community which grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless alleged witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a significant manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled ships to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a period of decline during the 1980's, since a high percentage of its factories closed, although it is still a successful and booming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the capital, and its first rate rail and road communications.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 16 mls from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
