River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in around the first century AD, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the leading culprits were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a considerable industrial town during the 19th C, producing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some about forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its industrial facilities went bust, even so it remains a thriving and booming town today, principally because of its nearness to the city of london, and its superb road and rail connections.
