An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the citizens of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the leading agitators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous alleged witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th century, crafting items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway came to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a high percentage of its manufacturers went bust, even so it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, mainly due to its proximity to the city of london, and the first rate rail and road connections.
