The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of about 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

A Saxon settlement superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 being called by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were accordingly executed in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many alleged witches.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a major industrial town during the nineteenth century, making goods such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, simply because much of its plants ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a flourishing and booming town today, for the most part due to the close proximity to the capital, plus its terrific rail and road communications.
