River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the community which expanded in the locality of the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading instigators were accordingly hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many suspected witches.

Throughout the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, crafting items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry shut down, even so it still is a thriving and booming town today, mainly because of its proximity to the city of london, and the outstanding rail and road connections.
