Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a population of about 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD, and the community which grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had taken on its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the instigators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous presumed witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a significant manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, producing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about forty five years before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, when much of its manufacturing plants closed down, even so it is still a successful and blooming town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the capital, and its first class road and rail connections.
