Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in roughly the 1st century AD, and the town which grew up around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading culprits were subsequently hung in the town after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a major industrial town during the 19th century, producing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was hit many times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline in the 1980's, since much of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the city of london, and its first class rail and road communications.

Chelmsford is positioned close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately 16 mls from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
