Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has a population of some 110,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly AD 60, and the settlement that expanded in the area of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was described as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later being called by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th century saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous presumed witches.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a vital industrial town in the 19th century, producing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its production facilities went bust, even so it remains a thriving and blooming town today, principally because of its proximity to the city of london, plus the terrific road and rail communications.

The town is set near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 26 km drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
