The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of roughly thirty two miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an ancient town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the encampment that evolved in the vicinity of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon settlement followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though 100 years later it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the inhabitants of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main culprits were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death countless alleged witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into an important manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, making goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully hit quite a few times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered substantial decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its manufacturers closed, even so it is still a thriving and growing town today, primarily due to the close proximity to London, plus the terrific rail and road communications.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 51 km from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
