The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of around 111,500 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the settlement which evolved round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death countless presumed witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry shut down, but it remains a thriving and booming town today, for the most part because of its nearness to the city of london, plus the first rate road and rail communications.

Chelmsford can be found just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is about 26 km from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
