The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a car journey of some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a populace of some 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in approximately AD 60, and the community that developed surrounding the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the locals of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main agitators were consequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry closed down, though it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, largely due to the nearness to the capital, and its quality road and rail communications.

The town is set near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen mls from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
