The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of around thirty two miles from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of around 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the citizens of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit many times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline in the 1980's, mainly because much of its manufacturing facilities closed down, though it remains a successful and booming town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to London, and its good rail and road links.

Chelmsford is positioned just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
