The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, around 32 miles from central London. The town has got a population of about 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the settlement that evolved around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 being called by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the agitators were consequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th C saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many supposed witches.

Across the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, manufacturing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was struck many times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered serious decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its manufacturing facilities closed, though it is still a successful and growing town today, largely because of its close proximity to London, plus the quality road and rail communications.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around 16 mls car journey from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
