The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, around thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

It is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the encampment that expanded around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the main agitators were later hung in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th C, producing goods such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline in the 1980's, since a high percentage of its factories ceased to be profitable, all the same it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, principally because of its proximity to London, plus the quality road and rail communications.

The town is situated close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some twenty six kilometres drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
