The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, about thirty two miles from the city of London. The town has got a populace of about 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up round the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its present identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were later hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged countless presumed witches.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, crafting products such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went into substantial decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, although it continues to be a successful and developing town today, primarily because of its proximity to the capital, plus the excellent rail and road connections.

Chelmsford is found adjacent to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some twenty six kilometres drive from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
