Its prominence in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a lot of its manufacturing plants shut down, though it still is a thriving and blooming town today, mainly due to the nearness to London, plus the first rate road and rail communications.
