The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 111,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD, and the village which expanded in the vicinity of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon community followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, though 100 years later being called by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the citizens of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the agitators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a considerable industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing products such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs before (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline in the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industry went bust, yet it continues to be a successful and booming town today, principally due to the proximity to the capital, plus its good rail and road communications.

The town lies just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some sixteen miles from Colchester and about 51 kilometers from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
