Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, a drive of roughly 32 miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the settlement that grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were thereafter executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town in the 19th century, producing such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the 1980's, when a lot of its industrial facilities closed down, though it is still a flourishing and booming town today, mainly because of its nearness to the city of london, and the outstanding road and rail communications.

The town is set adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's roughly sixteen miles from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
