The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has got a population of about 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately the first century AD, and the encampment which grew up round the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the occupants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the leading culprits were later executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a significant industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing such goods as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck several times.

The railway line found its way to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the 1980's, when a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it remains a thriving and growing town today, largely due to its nearness to the capital, and its superb road and rail communications.

The town is found close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around twenty six km drive from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
