Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around 45 years before (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities went bust, though it continues to be a successful and growing town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the capital, plus its quality rail and road communications.
