Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the community that grew up in the vicinity of the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the agitators were later executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a serious manufacturing town in the 19th C, making items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully hit on a few occasions.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the 1980's, since a lot of its industry shut down, even so it remains a successful and booming town today, mainly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus the good rail and road connections.

The town can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one km from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
