The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of some 110,000 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the encampment that grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon community came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was recognized as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it had become known by its current name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit a number of times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline during the 1980's, when much of its industry closed, even so it continues to be a thriving and booming town today, predominantly because of its closeness to London, plus the quality road and rail connections.

Chelmsford can be found adjacent to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately 26 km from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
