Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the village that evolved around the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the citizens of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were ultimately executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the 1980's, when much of its factories ceased to be profitable, even so it remains a successful and developing town today, for the most part due to the proximity to London, and the excellent road and rail communications.
