The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of roughly thirty two miles from the city of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of some 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the village which expanded in the locality of the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were consequently put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Chelmsford went into substantial decline in the 1980's, when a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities shut down, though it still is a flourishing and developing town today, largely due to its proximity to the city of london, plus its excellent road and rail links.
