The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford boasts a population of about 111,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the community that evolved round the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main agitators were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was successfully struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a lot of its industry closed down, though it remains a thriving and booming town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus its superb rail and road links.

Chelmsford is positioned close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is some 26 km from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
