The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of some 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment which expanded surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon settlement superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading culprits were later put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed numerous assumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industry closed, though it still is a successful and booming town today, for the most part due to the nearness to the capital, plus its superb rail and road connections.
