Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, roughly thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 111,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was later on the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the encampment which grew up around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was described as Celmeresfort, though by1189 it was being referred to by its current name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent some of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the agitators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into an important manufacturing town in the 19th century, making goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway line arrived at the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into substantial decline during the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it still is a flourishing and booming town today, predominantly due to the nearness to the capital, and the exceptional rail and road links.

The town is found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's around sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
