River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fortress in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment that grew up in the vicinity of the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp came after the demise of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent many of the people of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading agitators were thereafter put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many alleged exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 yrs before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, letting vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the 1980's, because a high percentage of its plants ceased to be profitable, though it is still a thriving and booming town today, predominantly due to the proximity to the capital, and the superb rail and road communications.
