Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 miles from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of around 110,000 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the village that grew up in the area of the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was noted as Celmeresfort, however by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

For several years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a serious industrial town in the nineteenth century, manufacturing items such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target of bombing during World War 2, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing craft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline during the 1980's, since a high percentage of its manufacturing plants shut down, though it remains a successful and booming town today, mainly due to its nearness to the capital, plus the excellent road and rail links.

The town can be found close to the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's some sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
