The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about 111,500 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

The 17th Cent witnessed more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous presumed witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town in the 19th century, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck several times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.
