Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, a car journey of roughly 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the village which developed round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the inhabitants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main instigators were thereafter hung in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, making products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was hit several times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, since a good deal of its plants closed, though it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part due to its close proximity to London, plus its first class rail and road communications.

The town lies adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's some sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
