Essex's county town, Chelmsford is located upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town has got a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the village which grew up surrounding the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon camp followed the demise of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although one hundred years later it had taken on its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century witnessed yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For many generations a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a considerable industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing such products as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck a few times.

The train came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some approximately 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since a high percentage of its industry closed down, even so it is still a successful and expanding town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the capital, plus its superb road and rail connections.

The town stands just off the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from central London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
