Essex's county town, Chelmsford can be found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,500 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was later the site of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up in the locality of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was documented as Celmeresfort, although by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the locals of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading culprits were thereafter hung in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C witnessed yet more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless presumed witches.

Throughout the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a vital manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, crafting such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on a few occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for vessels to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, mainly because a lot of its industry closed down, even so it is still a thriving and blooming town today, primarily because of its close proximity to the capital, and its superb rail and road communications.

The town is set just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 mls drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
