The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from the heart of London. The town boasts a populace of around one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later on the location of a Roman fortress in roughly AD 60, and the community which grew up round the fortification was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century many of the residents of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the main agitators were subsequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous presumed witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a substantial industrial town during the nineteenth century, making such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a time of decline during the 1980's, as much of its industry shut down, in spite of this it still is a successful and developing town today, principally because of its proximity to the capital, plus the good rail and road links.

The town sits beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is some sixteen miles drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
