The county town of Essex, Chelmsford can be found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of around 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in around the first century AD, and the commune which grew up in the locality of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp followed after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the citizens of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main culprits were subsequently put to death in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed many suspected witches.
