Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed craft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline in the 1980's, since a good deal of its factories closed down, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, for the most part due to the proximity to London, plus the outstanding rail and road communications.
