The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has a population of roughly 111,500 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the town which developed round the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community followed after the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the people of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous assumed witches.

For several centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town in the 19th C, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did roughly 45 years before (1797), when it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, allowing boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town got into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a lot of its production facilities closed down, in spite of this it is still a successful and booming town today, mostly due to its close proximity to London, plus the outstanding road and rail connections.

The town is located just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
