Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortress in around the 1st century AD, and the commune which developed round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment followed the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. During the 14th C many of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were later put to death in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The 17th century saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death many presumed witches.

Across the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, producing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was hit quite a few times.

The railway line arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some around forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing boats to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the 1980's, since much of its industry closed, yet it is still a successful and blooming town today, mainly due to its nearness to the capital, and its good road and rail communications.

The town is located close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is about twenty six kilometres drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
