Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has a population of some one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

Chelmsford is an age-old town which was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the town which grew up around the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was registered as Celmeresfort, though 100 years later it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the occupants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed many alleged witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a significant manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, crafting goods such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a target of bombing in WW2, and it was hit many times.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), when it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into some decline during the 1980's, mainly because a lot of its manufacturing facilities ceased to be profitable, though it continues to be a flourishing and developing town today, predominantly because of its close proximity to the city of london, plus the exceptional road and rail communications.

The town lies near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 16 miles drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
