River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later on the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the town which evolved round the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, however by1189 it was being referred to by its modern title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were later hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th Cent saw lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death numerous suspected witches.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into a vital industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately forty five years earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, even so it continues to be a thriving and expanding town today, largely due to its nearness to London, plus its quality road and rail communications.

The town sits near the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is about 16 miles car journey from Colchester and about 32 mls from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
