The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. The town has got a population of around 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fortress in approximately the 1st century AD, and the encampment that grew up around the fortress was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had taken on its current identity of Chelmsford.

During the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the instigators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century witnessed yet more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

Across the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, producing products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into significant decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its production facilities closed, though it still is a thriving and blooming town today, principally due to its nearness to the capital, plus the first class road and rail communications.
