Essex's county town, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a populace of some 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the community which grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon settlement superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were subsequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed countless presumed witches.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such items as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its significance in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck several times.

The railway arrived in the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its industry closed, even so it still is a flourishing and growing town today, primarily due to the nearness to London, plus the superb road and rail communications.

The town is found near the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately 16 mls from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
