A Saxon encampment followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless by1189 it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the residents of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were thereafter executed in the town after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the nineteenth century, manufacturing products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry caused it to be a target of bombing in WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The railway arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 yrs earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into serious decline during the 1980's, as a high percentage of its factories ceased to be profitable, all the same it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, mostly due to the close proximity to the city of london, plus its first rate rail and road communications.
