River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the town which grew up around the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the demise of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th C many of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the main agitators were consequently executed in the town after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous suspected witches.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned into an important manufacturing town during the 19th century, crafting such goods as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which made it possible for ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a good deal of its industry shut down, yet it is still a thriving and expanding town today, primarily due to its closeness to the city of london, plus its excellent road and rail connections.

The town is positioned near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 16 mls from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
