An Anglo Saxon community followed after the end of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and additionally became seat of the local assize. In the 14th century many of the occupants of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), several of the agitators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous assumed witches.

For many centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to an important industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing items such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into serious decline in the 1980's, as much of its manufacturing facilities closed down, even so it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, predominantly because of its closeness to London, plus its terrific road and rail links.
