The train found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which enabled boats to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, because much of its industry closed down, though it continues to be a thriving and blooming town today, principally because of its proximity to the capital, and the terrific rail and road communications.
