Essex's county town, Chelmsford sits upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two miles from the centre of London. The town has a populace of some 111,000 occupants, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

An Anglo Saxon camp succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its current identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th century, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the occupants of the town participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous presumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, producing such items as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit a number of times.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging ships to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the 1980's, as a lot of its industry closed, though it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, primarily because of its close proximity to London, and the first class rail and road connections.
