Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during World War 2, and it was hit on a few occasions.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town moved into considerable decline during the 1980's, because a good deal of its manufacturers ceased to be profitable, however it is still a thriving and developing town today, primarily because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the outstanding rail and road communications.
