The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from central London. The town boasts a population of some 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the commune which evolved surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was noted as Celmeresfort, even though by1189 it had become known by its modern name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were ultimately executed in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th century saw yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous alleged exponents of witchcraft.

Through the years a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became an important industrial town during the 19th C, crafting such goods as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during WW2, and it was hit on a number of occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 yrs earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling craft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its industry went bust, all the same it continues to be a thriving and growing town today, largely due to the close proximity to the city of london, and the good road and rail connections.

Chelmsford sits near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some twenty six km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
