Essex's county town, Chelmsford lies upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, some 32 mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of approximately 110,000 people, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historical Past: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the village that grew up around the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it was being referred to by its present-day identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the leading agitators were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the uprising.

The 17th Cent saw many more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous alleged witches.

Over the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed into a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, crafting items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was hit on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into serious decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its manufacturers closed down, though it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, largely because of its close proximity to the capital, and its quality road and rail communications.
