Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of around 32 miles from central London. The town boasts a population of approximately 111,500 occupants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

Chelmsford is an ancient town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church became a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic encampments, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about AD 60, and the settlement that grew up in the locality of the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp superseded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the locals of Chelmsford took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were later put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th century, manufacturing such goods as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was successfully struck several times.

The train came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its manufacturing plants ceased to be profitable, nevertheless it still is a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to its closeness to the city of london, plus its first rate road and rail links.

The town is situated beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
