The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has got a populace of some 111,500 residents, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly AD 60, and the town that grew up surrounding the fortification was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon community followed the decline of the Romans in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had become known by its current title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent some of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main agitators were ultimately put to death in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged countless presumed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, producing items such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering resulted in its being a bombing target during WWII, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The train arrived at the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, allowing vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into some decline during the nineteen-eighties, simply because much of its industrial facilities closed down, even so it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, predominantly due to its closeness to the city of london, plus its outstanding road and rail links.

The town is found near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it's around twenty six kilometers drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
