The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some 32 miles from the centre of London. Chelmsford has got a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,000.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately AD 60, and the town that developed around the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon settlement succeeded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it was being referred to by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th Cent saw yet more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and executed numerous assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to an important industrial town in the 19th century, producing products such as steam engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products, traction engines and ballbearings. Its importance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The railway came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling ships to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into considerable decline in the 1980's, since much of its manufacturing plants went bust, although it remains a thriving and expanding town today, for the most part due to its closeness to London, plus its excellent road and rail communications.

The town is located adjacent to the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately sixteen mls driving distance from Colchester and about 32 mls from the centre of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
