The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of roughly 32 miles from the heart of London. The town boasts a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in approximately the 1st century AD, and the settlement which developed round the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon encampment followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was described as Celmeresfort, however 100 years later it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the agitators were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century witnessed more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, producing such goods as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered some decline during the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its industry closed, though it is still a flourishing and booming town today, for the most part because of its proximity to London, plus its first rate rail and road communications.

The town is located beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 km car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
