Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD, and the commune which grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community superseded the end of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was listed as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the locals of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the agitators were accordingly put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many presumed witches.

Over the years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing items such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a bombing target during the Second World War, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it linked the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline in the 1980's, as a high percentage of its factories went bust, though it remains a successful and blooming town today, primarily because of its nearness to London, and its quality rail and road communications.

The town is positioned just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is approximately twenty six kilometers car journey from Colchester and about thirty-two mls from the heart of London.
