Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing led to its being a bombing target in the Second World War, and it was struck a number of times.

The train found its way to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a good deal of its industry closed, although it is still a flourishing and growing town today, largely due to the nearness to London, and the outstanding road and rail links.
