Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, approximately 32 miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of some 111,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the village which expanded around the fort was called Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon community followed the end of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by the year 1199 it had taken on its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the citizens of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the ringleaders were subsequently executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned into a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, manufacturing items such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit on a number of occasions.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra prosperity for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to sail to the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its production facilities closed down, though it continues to be a successful and blooming town today, largely because of its closeness to London, plus its first rate rail and road communications.
