The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some 32 mls from central London. Chelmsford has a populace of approximately 111,500 people, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was changed into a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The site of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD, and the encampment which grew up surrounding the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later being called by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the residents of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the instigators were subsequently hung in Chelmsford after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The seventeenth century witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged numerous alleged witches.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, crafting goods such as steam engines, traction engines, wirelesses, electrical engineering products and ballbearings. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done about 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through some decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry ceased to be profitable, all the same it remains a flourishing and blooming town today, mainly due to the proximity to the capital, plus its exceptional rail and road communications.
