River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fort in roughly the first century AD, and the village that grew up round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon community came after the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 it had become known by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the leading culprits were ultimately put to death in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century witnessed many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous alleged witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck quite a few times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the 1980's, since much of its manufacturing plants shut down, though it remains a successful and booming town today, mainly due to the nearness to the city of london, plus its good road and rail communications.

The town can be found beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 16 miles from Colchester and about fifty-one km from central London. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
