The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is positioned upon the Can and Chelmer rivers, a drive of roughly thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of around 111,000 inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD, and the town which grew up surrounding the fortress was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community followed after the demise of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, though by1189 being called by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the leading instigators were later put to death in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw many more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous suspected witches.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target for bombing during WWII, and it was hit many times.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, making it possible for watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town went through a time of decline during the 1980's, since much of its industry shut down, even so it is still a flourishing and expanding town today, principally due to the nearness to the city of london, plus the outstanding road and rail connections.

The town stands close to the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is approximately sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
