A Saxon camp followed the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, even though by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern name of Chelmsford.

As long ago thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the occupants of Chelmsford participated in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the ringleaders were accordingly executed in Chelmsford after the uprising was ended by Richard II.

The 17th Cent witnessed yet more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death many supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Throughout the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town during the 19th century, manufacturing such items as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during WW2, and it was struck on a number of occasions.

The railway found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 years before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, enabling vessels to access the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went into a period of decline during the nineteen-eighties, when much of its industry closed down, even so it still is a flourishing and expanding town today, predominantly due to its proximity to the capital, and the exceptional road and rail communications.

The town sits beside the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's some 26 km from Colchester and about 51 kms from the centre of the capital. Tourist Information Centre Address - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
