The county town of Essex, Chelmsford sits on the rivers Chelmer and Can, a driving distance of roughly thirty two mls from the city of London. Chelmsford has got a population of some 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in about AD 60, and the village which grew up in the vicinity of the fort was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon community came after the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it was being referred to by its current title of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the main culprits were ultimately executed in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford developed in to a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th C, manufacturing goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping boats to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into some decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its manufacturing facilities closed, all the same it is still a thriving and developing town today, mostly because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the outstanding rail and road links.

The town is set beside the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is around twenty six km drive from Colchester and about fifty-one kilometers from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Phone: 01245 263859.
