The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated on the Can and Chelmer rivers, approximately 32 miles from the city of London. The town has a population of some 110,000 occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

Chelmsford is an old town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).
