The county town of Essex, Chelmsford stands on the rivers Can and Chelmer, a car journey of approximately thirty two miles from the heart of London. Chelmsford has a population of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fortress in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of early Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements, Chelmsford was later on the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the community that expanded in the area of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 being called by its present title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and also became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century many of the inhabitants of Chelmsford took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the instigators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many assumed witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th century, making such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry led to its being a target for bombing during WWII, and it was struck a number of times.

The railway found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, which made it possible for watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline during the nineteen-eighties, since a good deal of its industry closed, even so it remains a thriving and developing town today, for the most part due to its nearness to the capital, plus its first rate road and rail links.
