Essex's county town, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a population of roughly 110,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has approximately 168,300.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the location of a Roman fortification in around the 1st century AD, and the town that grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment succeeded the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recognized as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C a number of the people of Chelmsford became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, several of the ringleaders were later hung in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the uprising.

The 17th century saw even more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged many alleged witches.

Through the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, producing such items as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industry resulted in its being a target of bombing during WW2, and it was successfully struck quite a few times.

The train arrived in Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years earlier (1797), when it connected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping ships to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went into a time of decline in the 1980's, since a good deal of its industry ceased to be profitable, even so it is still a successful and developing town today, mostly due to the nearness to London, plus its first class rail and road communications.

The town is situated adjacent to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it is roughly twenty six km car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
