The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two miles from the city of London. The town boasts a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,000.

Chelmsford is an early town that was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The site of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the encampment which expanded around the fortification was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its present-day name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century some of the residents of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the leading instigators were accordingly hung in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C saw many more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and hanged numerous suspected witches.

Over the centuries a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford developed into a major industrial town during the 19th C, making such products as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its import in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in the Second World War, and it was successfully hit many times.

The railway line came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some 45 yrs before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into serious decline during the 1980's, as a lot of its industry ceased to be profitable, nevertheless it still is a thriving and developing town today, predominantly due to its closeness to the city of london, plus the quality rail and road links.
