Chelmsford is an old town which was the location of a Roman fortress in about 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long gone Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD, and the commune that grew up surrounding the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . An Anglo Saxon encampment superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was documented as Celmeresfort, whilst 100 years later it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century some of the citizens of the town participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a handful of the ringleaders were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The seventeenth century saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a significant manufacturing town in the 19th C, manufacturing products such as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a bombing target in WW2, and it was struck quite a few times.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some 45 years before (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which allowed vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town entered a time of decline during the 1980's, simply because a lot of its industries closed, all the same it is still a successful and blooming town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to the city of london, and the quality road and rail communications.

The town sits near the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it is around sixteen mls drive from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from central London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
