River Chelmer - - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The location of early Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortification in about 60 AD, and the encampment which developed in the vicinity of the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon camp superseded the demise of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the eleventh century Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, nonetheless one hundred years later being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex plus became seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century many of the people of the town were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a few of the ringleaders were subsequently hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the revolt.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford developed in to a major industrial town in the nineteenth century, making products such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industry caused it to be a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck many times.

The train arrived in the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater prosperity for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did around forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it connected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, enabling boats to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into a time of decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a high percentage of its plants closed, even so it remains a flourishing and growing town today, primarily due to the proximity to the capital, and the first class rail and road communications.
