Essex's county town, Chelmsford is positioned on the rivers Chelmer and Can, roughly thirty two mls from the city of London. The town has a population of some 110,000 residents, and the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historical town which was the location of a Roman fortification in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin was honoured with the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The History of Chelmsford: The location of very early Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the settlement which developed round the fort was known as Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was noted as Celmeresfort, whilst one hundred years later it had become known by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th C some of the locals of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading instigators were thereafter executed in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the revolt.

The 17th century witnessed many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and put to death many suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became an important manufacturing town in the 19th Cent, making such goods as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its prominence in light industry led to its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was struck a few times.

The railway arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing extra affluence to the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs before (1797), at which time it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through considerable decline during the 1980's, mainly because a high percentage of its industry closed down, nonetheless it is still a successful and booming town today, principally due to its closeness to the city of london, and its excellent road and rail communications.

The town is situated just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is around 16 miles drive from Colchester and about 32 miles from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Tel: 01245 263859.
