The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is found on the Can and Chelmer rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has got a populace of approximately one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortress in around 60 AD. Its parish church St Mary the Virgin became a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

An Anglo Saxon camp followed the end of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its present-day title of Chelmsford.

As early as the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the agitators were subsequently executed in the town after Richard II ended the revolt.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Over the generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a major industrial town during the 19th Cent, producing goods such as ball bearings, agricultural machinery, traction engines, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, as the the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five yrs earlier (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging watercraft to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, as a high percentage of its industry went bust, though it remains a successful and booming town today, principally because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the exceptional road and rail links.
