A Saxon settlement followed after the decline of Roman control in Britain, and in the Domesday Book (1086) it was listed as Celmeresfort, nonetheless by1189 it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, it became the county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the fourteenth century a number of the people of the town were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the leading culprits were thereafter hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a major manufacturing town in the 19th century, producing such products as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its prominence in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing during WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived in Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it interconnected Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, encouraging ships to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a period of decline in the nineteen-eighties, since much of its industrial facilities went bust, though it continues to be a successful and developing town today, primarily because of its proximity to London, and the outstanding road and rail communications.
