River Chelmer - - 411097The Historical Past of Chelmsford: The location of early Bronze Age and Neolithic communities, Chelmsford was later the location of a Roman fortification in about the 1st century AD, and the village that expanded surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp superseded the decline of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book (1086) it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it had taken on its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

As long ago 13th Cent, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th C some of the residents of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a number of the agitators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The seventeenth century saw even more executions as Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and put to death countless assumed exponents of witchcraft.

For several generations an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford turned in to a significant industrial town in the 19th C, producing such products as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its importance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WWII, and it was successfully struck on a few occasions.

The train arrived at Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done roughly forty five yrs earlier (1797), at which time it joined the town with the Blackwater estuary, encouraging vessels to sail to the centre of town from the open sea.

The town went through significant decline in the 1980's, because a lot of its factories went bust, though it continues to be a successful and growing town today, predominantly due to the close proximity to the capital, and its superb road and rail communications.

The town sits just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it is roughly 26 km driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
