The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 mls from central London. The town has a population of around one hundred and eleven thousand inhabitants, while the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,000.

It is a historical town that was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age encampments, the town was later on the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the 1st century AD, and the community which developed round the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the downfall of Roman control in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was recorded as Celmeresfort, although by1189 it had become known by its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it took on the title of county town of Essex and additionally became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of the town became involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, a handful of the instigators were later hung in the town after the revolt was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", tried and executed countless suspected exponents of witchcraft.

For many years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford became a substantial industrial town during the 19th Cent, making goods such as steam engines, electrical engineering products, wirelesses, traction engines and ballbearings. Its import in light industrial engineering led to its being a bombing target during World War 2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The train found its way to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did approximately 45 years before (1797), when it linked Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, making it possible for boats to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford moved into a period of decline during the 1980's, because a lot of its industry closed, all the same it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, for the most part because of its proximity to the capital, and the quality road and rail links.

The town is found just off the A12 in between Colchester and Brentwood it's approximately sixteen miles car journey from Colchester and about 51 km from the centre of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
