The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is set upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from the centre of London. Chelmsford has a populace of roughly 111,500 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,000.

It is a historic town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was named a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Annonay (France) and Backnang (Germany).

River Chelmer - - 411097Chelmsford Historic Past: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the site of a Roman fort in about 60 AD, and the settlement which grew up round the fortification was named Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon camp succeeded the decline of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was named Celmeresfort, though one hundred years later being called by its present name of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th Cent, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex plus became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the inhabitants of Chelmsford were involved in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading agitators were ultimately hung in Chelmsford after Richard II ended the rebellion.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed many suspected witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town during the 19th C, manufacturing such products as ball bearings, traction engines, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its significance in light industry resulted in its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was struck on several occasions.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence to the town, the same as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, which enabled ships to reach the centre of town from the open sea.

The town moved into considerable decline in the nineteen-eighties, when a high percentage of its factories went bust, though it still is a flourishing and booming town today, for the most part due to the nearness to the capital, plus the outstanding road and rail links.
