The county town of Essex, Chelmsford lies on the Chelmer and Can rivers, a driving distance of about 32 mls from the heart of London. Chelmsford boasts a populace of about one hundred and eleven thousand occupants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

It is an age-old town that was the location of a Roman fort in around 60 AD. Its parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. Chelmsford is twinned with Annonay in France and Backnang in Germany.

River Chelmer - - 411097The Historic Past of Chelmsford: The location of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, Chelmsford was subsequently the location of a Roman fort in roughly 60 AD, and the town that grew up in the vicinity of the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . A Saxon encampment came after the decline of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, whilst by1189 it was being referred to by its contemporary identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th C, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the occupants of Chelmsford were involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), some of the main agitators were ultimately hung in the town after Richard the Second ended the rebellion.

The 17th C saw more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and hanged many assumed witches.

For several generations a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford evolved in to a serious manufacturing town in the 19th century, making items such as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its significance in light industrial manufacturing resulted in its being a target for bombing in WW2, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The railway line came to Chelmsford in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation did some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing craft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through serious decline in the 1980's, when a good deal of its industry closed down, but it continues to be a flourishing and expanding town today, largely due to the nearness to London, and the outstanding rail and road connections.

Chelmsford lies close to the A12 in between Brentwood and Colchester it's about 26 kilometres driving distance from Colchester and about fifty-one kms from the heart of London. Address of Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
