Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some 32 miles from the centre of London. The town boasts a populace of roughly one hundred and eleven thousand people, whilst the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of very early Bronze Age and Neolithic colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in approximately the first century AD, and the settlement which evolved surrounding the fortification was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. A Saxon community came after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was registered as Celmeresfort, whilst by the year 1199 it had taken on its modern identity of Chelmsford.

At the time of the 13th Cent, it took on the title of county town of Essex and moreover became the seat of the local assize. In the 14th Cent a number of the inhabitants of the town took part in the 1381 Peasant Revolt, some of the leading culprits were subsequently executed in Chelmsford after Richard the Second ended the insurrection.

The 17th century saw many more executions as the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and hanged numerous supposed exponents of witchcraft.

Over the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, producing such items as wirelesses, ball bearings, steam engines, electrical engineering products and traction engines. Its importance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target during World War 2, and it was hit several times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing more affluence for the town, comparable to what the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had some some 45 years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping watercraft to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

The town got into serious decline in the nineteen-eighties, simply because a good deal of its manufacturers closed down, all the same it is still a thriving and developing town today, principally due to the nearness to London, and its exceptional road and rail communications.
