Essex's county town, Chelmsford stands on the Chelmer and Can rivers, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has got a population of roughly 111,500 people, and the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

It is an early town which was the location of a Roman fortification in approximately 60 AD. Its St Mary the Virgin parish church got the title of a cathedral in 1914. The town is twinned with Backnang in Germany and Annonay in France.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The location of long past Neolithic and Bronze Age colonies, the town was later the location of a Roman fortification in roughly 60 AD, and the town that developed in the vicinity of the fort was called Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) by the Romans. An Anglo Saxon encampment followed after the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, although 100 years later it had become known by its modern identity of Chelmsford.

In the 13th century, Chelmsford took on the title of county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th century a number of the locals of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the agitators were ultimately hung in the town after the insurrection was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed even more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, tried and executed countless assumed witches.

Across the centuries an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial manufacturing town during the 19th Cent, making such items as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its importance in light industrial engineering led to its being a target for bombing during the Second World War, and it was successfully hit a few times.

The train came to the town in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done approximately forty five years earlier (1797), at which time it joined Chelmsford with the estuary of the River Blackwater, helping vessels to access the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford entered some decline during the nineteen-eighties, because a high percentage of its industry closed down, though it is still a flourishing and growing town today, principally due to its nearness to the capital, plus its good road and rail communications.

The town is positioned just off the A12 between Brentwood and Colchester it's around twenty six kilometres from Colchester and about 32 miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke St, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
