Essex's county town, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Can and Chelmer, some thirty two mls from central London. Chelmsford has got a population of approximately 110,000 residents, whereas the Borough of Chelmsford has about 168,300.

It is a historic town that was the location of a Roman fort in approximately 60 AD. Chelmsford's parish church St Mary the Virgin was given the title of a cathedral in 1914. The city is twinned with Backnang (Germany) and Annonay (France).

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097The Story of Chelmsford: The site of long gone Neolithic and Bronze Age communities, the town was subsequently the site of a Roman fortress in around AD 60, and the community that grew up surrounding the fort was named Caesaromagus (Caesar's market place) . An Anglo Saxon encampment came after the downfall of the Romans in Britain, and much later in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless one hundred years later it had become known by its current identity of Chelmsford.

As early as the 13th C, it became the county town of Essex and in addition became the seat of the local assize. In the fourteenth century some of the occupants of the town became involved in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the leading instigators were consequently put to death in Chelmsford after the insurrection was ended by Richard II.

The 17th C saw more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death numerous suspected exponents of witchcraft.

Across the centuries a market town and agricultural centre, Chelmsford turned in to a substantial industrial town in the 19th Cent, manufacturing goods such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its significance in light industrial engineering caused it to be a bombing target in World War 2, and it was successfully hit on several occasions.

The railway line found its way to the town in eighteen forty two (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing increased prosperity to the town, much as the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done some forty five years before (1797), when it interconnected the town with the Blackwater estuary, helping watercraft to access the centre of town from the open sea.

Chelmsford got into a period of decline in the 1980's, simply because a high percentage of its manufacturing plants shut down, in spite of this it still is a successful and growing town today, principally due to its proximity to the city of london, plus its first class rail and road links.

The town lies near the A12 between Colchester and Brentwood it is some sixteen miles driving distance from Colchester and about thirty-two miles from the heart of London. Tourist Information Centre - Railway Station, Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1HT. Telephone: 01245 263859.
