The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is located upon the Chelmer and Can rivers, a drive of about 32 mls from the heart of London. The town has got a populace of some 111,000 inhabitants, and the Borough of Chelmsford has around 168,300.

An Anglo Saxon settlement superseded the end of Roman control in Britain, and in the 1086 Domesday Book it was named Celmeresfort, nevertheless 100 years later it was being referred to by its contemporary name of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, it took on the title of county town of Essex and furthermore became the seat of the local assize. During the 14th Cent many of the residents of Chelmsford participated in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a few of the instigators were accordingly put to death in the town after the uprising was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th Cent witnessed lots more executions when the"Witchfinder General" Matthew Hopkins, put on trial and executed numerous supposed witches.

For many years a market town and agricultural hub, Chelmsford became a considerable manufacturing town in the nineteenth century, making such items as traction engines, ballbearings, agricultural machinery, electrical engineering products and wirelesses. Its import in light industry led to its being a bombing target in WWII, and it was hit on several occasions.
