The county town of Essex, Chelmsford is situated upon the rivers Chelmer and Can, some thirty two mls from central London. The town has got a populace of some one hundred and eleven thousand residents, while the Borough of Chelmsford has roughly 168,300.

River Chelmer - geograph.org.uk - 411097Chelmsford History: The site of long past Bronze Age and Neolithic settlements, Chelmsford was later the site of a Roman fort in about AD 60, and the community that developed in the locality of the fortress was known as Caesaromagus (market place of Caesar) . A Saxon camp superseded the downfall of the Roman Empire in Britain, and much later in the Domesday Book of 1086 it was listed as Celmeresfort, even though one hundred years later it had taken on its contemporary title of Chelmsford.

During the thirteenth century, Chelmsford became the county town of Essex and furthermore became seat of the local assize. During the 14th century some of the locals of the town took part in the Peasants Revolt (1381), a number of the main agitators were consequently hung in Chelmsford after the rebellion was ended by Richard the Second.

The 17th C witnessed lots more executions when Matthew Hopkins, the "Witchfinder General", put on trial and put to death many alleged witches.

Across the years an agricultural and market town, Chelmsford evolved into a substantial industrial town in the 19th century, making products such as agricultural machinery, steam engines, traction engines, ball bearings, wirelesses, and electrical engineering products. Its import in light industrial manufacturing caused it to be a target of bombing in World War 2, and it was successfully struck many times.

The railway line arrived at Chelmsford in 1842 (Eastern Counties Railway) bringing greater affluence for the town, similar to that which the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation had done around forty five years before (1797), when it connected the town with the Blackwater estuary, letting watercraft to reach the heart of the town from the open sea.

Chelmsford went through a time of decline during the 1980's, as a good deal of its industry went bust, even so it remains a flourishing and expanding town today, mainly because of its close proximity to the city of london, and the excellent road and rail connections.
